Residential, Commercial and Light Industrial

A generic standard based on environment of use

The residential, commercial and light industrial environment generic standard is for products intended for sale to the general public, for which no Product Specific or Product Family standard exists, and which can be used in a residential, commercial and Light Industrial environment. The basic rule of thumb for these standards is the Emissions test limits are a bit more stringent and the immunity test levels are not as severe as for products that would be used in a heavy industrial environment.

The required tests that will give a presumption of conformity with the particular essential requirements, are listed within the generic standard.

THE TESTS COVER;
Radiated and conducted emissions (61000-6-3)
Power frequency magnetic field (61000-6-1)
Radio frequency electromagnetic field (61000-6-1)
Radio frequency common mode conducted (61000-6-1)
Electrostatic discharge (61000-6-1)
Electrical fast transients, (61000-6-1)
Power input/output surge (61000-6-1)
Voltage dips and interruptions (61000-6-1)

The generic standard provides the limits; application and applicability of the given test, but the methods for performing a particular test are found within other basic standards.

EN (European Norm) 61000-6-3: Emissions and EN 61000-6-1: Immunity encompasses the Generic product family for the Residential, Commercial and Light Industrial Environments. These standards, when coupled with AC Harmonics and Flicker where applicable, give the presumption of conformity to the essential requirements of the EMC directive 2004/108/EC.

The applicable versions are listed on EMC Directive list of harmonized standards published on the European Commission web site.
